The Final One

Well, this will be the last email I send out as a missionary. Time has blasted by since I first started. I used to write weekly emails that were just fun stories of things that happened, and try to make them as entertaining as possible. Then my emails slowly died out, and became less and less consistent. I think they also got so much shorter, and didn’t focus on the weird things we did as much.

The biggest change, though, was in myself. Over the course of two years, the focus of my mission went from just trying to have the best time I could, to trying to help others come closer to Jesus Christ. I would say I’m still somewhat the same person– I haven’t become boring Steve, the straight talk tomato eater, but I’ve grown a whole lot since the beginning.

The raffle explains it a lot better than I can, so be sure to go watch that video. I’ll put the link at the end. But thank you everyone for reading these! This won’t really be goodbye, since I’ll be able to have even more contact with everyone after I get home, so we won’t make this some big sad email.

I’ve loved being a missionary, though. I think it is genuinely impossible to explain what a mission is truly like. And even if you have served a mission, it will still be so incredibly unique to you. I would love to talk about my mission with anybody, so please just reach out and ask me what questions you have!

Thanks again everyone! I look forward to seeing you guys soon!

For the last time,

What Makes it Worth it

Alright, so I know it’s been a little bit. I don’t know what updates I should even give. We are helping the people here come closer to Jesus Christ. It’s great, and the Holy Ghost does all the work. We just walk around and read scriptures and stuff, it’s wild. I’m convinced that the sole role of a missionary is to bring the Spirit to people, and everything we do is focused on achieving that goal.

We also recently found a spider that was the size of my hand. At least, his uber long legs were. No, I’m not going to be putting my hand close to it though, so there is no picture of this thing. You’re just going to have to exercise faith and believe on my words.

Most likely, I will only be sending one more email after this one. And that will be on the final P-day of my mission. So I’ll make sure it’s good.

As for what’s been happening here lately, I’ve just been trying to work as hard as I can, and it’s pretty exhausting. But I’m heavenbent on finishing my mission strong, so nothing is going to stop me. We’ve been able to find a lot more people to talk to, and the work here in Shawnee is picking up. I really don’t know what else to say. I’ve pretty much summed it all up.

I guess to share a fun story, we have been talking to this person named Maleya, and we told her to read the Book of Mormon and pray to ask God if it’s true (like we ALWAYS do). Well, 20 minutes after our lesson, we get a text from her saying: “It’s true. All of it.” It took a second for our heads to wrap around what just happened, but it was legendary. There is definitely a lot of rejection on a mission, but when you get those honest seekers of truth, that sincerely ask and read, it’s worth it. It makes it all worth it.

So I’ll keep working out here, and then send out that final email on the 19th. Be on the lookout. I’ll be raffling off one of my most valuable possessions.

Hope you guys all have a good one!

Tell me What

So, I know it has been a little bit. A lot has happened. Elder Devenport’s foot got run over by a car. We saw zebras in a dude’s backyard. I learned a lot about Jesus Christ. So much has happened, but I can’t even think about what happened. I know that so much did, but I don’t really remember all of it.

So what we’ll do is change the roles around a little bit. I have attached a few photos. Five, to be exact. And I want all 4 of you that read these emails to go through them (they aren’t in order, you get to choose the order) and tell me what happened this week. Tell me the story that strings all of these events together. I think it would be really fun to see what ideas you guys have.

And I think the reason I don’t really think about the stories that go in my week as much is because I’m really trying to just think about the people who we’re teaching and talking to, and how we can help them come closer to Jesus Christ. And I think it’s changed my mindset quite a bit. So I think that’s the main reason why I haven’t written some lengthy story montage of crazy things that have happened. But I absolutely love it out here. I could not be doing anything better.

Thanks for reading; I appreciate it. I hope to get some fun stories back. Have a good week and I’ll catch you later!

SHOUTOUTS:

  • Ethan – It was his birthday earlier this week, happy birthday man. You’re awesome
  • Kyra – My sister’s birthday is on the 22nd, and she is wonderful. If you want her email, hit me up

Now I’m in Shawnee

That’s the name of the city I’m serving in now! Midwest City was a great place and there was a lot going on, but God needs me here now, and I’m stoked. I’m with a guy named Elder Devenport, and he’s pretty quiet but really nice.

No idea what else to say because I just got here, but it’s cool! Maybe I’ll get a longer email out next week, but things are good! We’re putting in work, and it feels good! If you have any questions, let me know!

From Friend to Foe

Weeklies have become the bane of me now. I remember thinking I would send these bad boys every week, and it would be awesome. Then in quarantine it was a walk on some cake, because all we did every Monday was email people, so it was just built into my routine. Then we got to play sports with other missionaries, and yeah, here we are. Writing weekly emails once a month.

Now, last time I sent one out, I asked for some questions, and you already know that this week was AWESOME, and we got to teach people more about Jesus Christ, so it’s been great. And we teach ’em about prophets today, revelation and how we can receive it, the Book of Mormon, all the good things. And it’s such a great blessing to be a part of this.

Here are those questions though, as well as my answers:

From Dad:

Now that you’ve been out on your mission for over a year and a half, do you feel “experienced”?

Kinda. I feel like I know the groove of missionary work, and the do’s and don’ts, but still, you just need to rely on the Savior in everything you do anyway, so your level of experience doesn’t really matter.

How does it compare to when you first went out?

I definitely feel like I know more now. But the most important thing is that I finally learned what a real work ethic is. In the beginning I was pretty much looking for the bare minimum that I could do, as opposed to now, where I just try to do all I can.

What’s your favorite thing about being a missionary?

I cannot fit that in an email. There are too many favorite things. One of them is just getting to serve other people.

Originally you were hoping to be called to serve in Moscow, or at least somewhere foreign.  Are you glad you were called to Oklahoma?  Why?  (Or why not?)

Oklahoma is hands down the greatest place to serve a mission. It’s where only the coolest missionaries get called, and that’s painstakingly obvious if you just meet the missionaries here. We have our mission president and wife, the Christensens, and they are the toppest notch people holy smokes. As cool as it would be to learn a sick language, I’ve met some of the greatest people here, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

What was a really cool experience you had teaching the gospel to someone?

We have this person we’re teaching who we gave a Book of Mormon to, and she was going through a lot in life, and we gave her a single chapter to read, but she ended up reading like, almost 60 chapters the next time we talked to her, and she was just like, “Oh yeah, I know it’s true.” It was so sick. You just gotta read the Book of Mormon, it’s that easy.

From Ethan:

How good are you at spikeball?

Good enough to beat every person that reads this email. (Subject to change based on my teammate)

Do you ever get to eat taco bell with the bajajajajaja blast?

Son please. Of course I do. Why do you think I’m broke out here?

From Kyle:

What is the simplest thing you enjoy about your day that doesn’t involve any other people (i.e., you enjoy sunsets, hot washcloths, whatever super super simplistic thing)

Getting to eat a simple dinner that I like. Like grilled ham and cheese or something.

From Sadie:

Which is better: Five Guys or In-n-Out?

They taste the same

Who is your favorite person that you are teaching right now and why?

The girl I talked about that read almost 60 chapters in less than a week. And it’s because she’s actually willing to do something to learn for herself that the things we teach are true.

From Derek:

Story time, coolest experience being led by the Spirit?

There’s a lot of cool ones, so it’s hard to choose a favorite, but a recent one is:
We were going through our list of people who we’re teaching, just trying to get in contact with them. Then we had this one guy that I had talked to once, about 10 weeks ago, and we’re like, “Should we give him one more call, or just put him as someone that we can’t get in contact with?” We had also tried to stop by a bunch of times to no avail. But we were just like, “Bump it, full send.” And then through a sheer miracle, he picked up the phone, and within a minute, we had a time set up to meet. It’s pretty simple, but it was still cool.

How many Bar S 88-cent hot dogs can you eat in one sitting, for breakfast?

For breakfast? Two.

And there we go! That’s the week, and there are the questions/answers. We’ll see if there’s another one of these next week or not! See ya!

Silent as the Grave

Sometimes, you just don’t write those weekly emails. It’s that simple. Because you’re too busy getting rocked in the face by a 4 square ball, or carrying your team in Spike ball. Which is exactly what we were doing today. It was SO SICK.

But for the few people that still read and enjoy these emails, I will have you all know that it has been AWESOME out here! Midwest City is the MidBLESSED City! We’re teaching so many people, and finding new people all the time. The weeks have been great and I love being able to be a missionary.

I liked writing the weekly when I answered questions, so you guys should send me questions or things you want me to talk about, then I’ll have some direction with these things and perhaps even some desire to write them. But yeah, life is good, Jesus Christ is good, and sometimes the food is good too. Thanks for reading these and hit me with some questions. Catch you later.

4 Braum’s Hats

So I was sick. And if you’ve ever been sick, that’s how I was for a couple days. But I’m good now.

Nothing is really new. We’re still teaching people, and sometimes they choose the wrong option, and then don’t pray about if what we’re teaching is true, and then they tell us that they don’t think the Book of Mormon is true. Oh, I’ll also include that they failed to read it. They did not read or pray about the Book of Mormon. And then they’re surprised when the angels of heaven don’t just pull up in their Chariot GTs, shades on, and point blank tell them it’s true before blazing back off into the sky. It’s wild. You gotta actually do things before you get an answer??? It’s so foreign to some people.

But then we have the flip side, where someone calls us and says that they’ve been reading the Book of Mormon and they love Nephi (a prophet in the book) and they just want to be like him because he’s so cool. It’s awesome.

But yeah, I’ll throw on a picture of me wearing 4 hats. 4 Braum’s hats. If you served in this mission, you’ll know that Braum’s hats are the unattainable treasure that everyone hopes to have. But we figured something out.

And that’s all from me, have a good week gang!

I Know it’s Been 2 Weeks

Look, it’s a busy life I live out here. Time has just been going faster and faster. But it’s been a way good time. We’re teaching people, learning more about Jesus Christ, and just having a bop.

But as to some fun things that have happened:

This lady that was blazed out of her mind told us we were wrong, and tried to convince us that we were. Except she couldn’t even speak she was so high. It was incredible. I love Oklahoma.

We finally got bashed again, by the high lady’s daughter, and it’s been a while since that parade marched through my life, so that was fun. Not really, people are so unwilling to change it’s pathetic. So all we do is testify to them and then leave.

And yeah, that’s what’s up. I’ll tell you, the reason the raffle has been postponed and will be yet again is because I don’t have the cup with me… With all the names. Nor do I have the time. BUT, we’ll see. Maybe we skip this time, and just pick it up next month. Anyways, hope everyone has a good one!

SHOUTOUTS:

  • David – He used to be Elder Spillman, one of my very first companions, but he’s finished his mission and is home now. He’s a good guy, and taught me a lot.
  • Patrick and Ethan – These pics go out to my friends with sick gymnastic ability. Keep killing it in Texas my guys.

  • I don’t even know how to explain the context

I’m still alive

Well, it’s been a week. Good things happened, but I’m drained. So we’re living life, and teaching people. And it’s great!
But yeah, I’ll catch you guys next week.

P.S. The Raffle is getting pushed back again…

The Q & A

Alright, shoutout to all the people that sent me a question. Your reward is fame without limits, because I’m going to put your name next to the question.
But first, my week.

It’s been good. We teach people about Jesus Christ, and how to be happy and find hope because of Him. It’s great. And in the process of helping out other people, I’ve been able to learn more about Jesus Christ, and become not a schmuck. The Atonement of Jesus Christ really can change lives, and I know that because it’s changed mine.

So the mission has been a great time. Wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Now, to answer all these wonderful questions. We’ve got the name of the person that asked it, their exact wording, and then my response. Buckle up.

My Dad:

Q: What’s something you’ve discovered is unique to Oklahoma?  A phrase people say, a store that’s nowhere else, a food…?

A: “Fixin ta” Which is used in the context of planning on doing something. “Fixin ta drive the tractor.”

There’s also water towers all over the place, because this entire state can be used as a level, so they need to make water pressure.

The word “Y’all”, and I’m sure most everyone getting these emails knows my stance on that word, and that it belongs in the garbage.

Q: What are some things you learned from your companions?  Not just gospel stuff, but life skills too.

A: Elder Miller how to be a better person. Elder Grace taught me a better way to tie my ties. But honestly, I’ve learned a whole lot more than I can write. They’ve all been great.

Q: What’s the best thing about being a missionary?

A: Everything. Getting to focus on serving people, testifying about Jesus Christ, not worrying about life, meeting crazy people, meeting super cool missionaries, it’s all a blast.

Q: Have you gained weight during the mission?  Are you in better shape than you were, or worse?

A: I think I’ve lost some weight, but we don’t have a scale. I’ve definitely worked out more and can do more push ups than I used to be able to do sooooo….

Q: Who’s your favorite person in the scriptures, and why?

A: In the Book of Mormon: Captain Moroni or Ammon. In the Bible: Elijah

Q: What food do you miss the most?

A: Outback Steakhouse. Specifically the mac and cheese that you can get as a side

Bryce:

Q: What are you doing when you get off the mission? Going straight to Utah for college? Gonna work for a while in Montana?

A: Not 100% sure. I’ll have some time before college starts, so probably hang out with my family and figure out the rest when I actually get there.

Ethan:

Q: Where’s the backflip my good sir?

A: It’s been over a year since I got to throw down in any gymnastics, but I’ll get it when I get home

Eliza:

Q: What kind of bear is best?

A: Pandas. Easy answer, those guys are so chill

Keaton:

Q: What’s your favorite block in minecraft?

A: Raw Oak Wood

Makenna:

Q: What’s your favorite food to eat lol?

A: Whatever I’m feeling in the moment. Right now, probably the mac cheese I was talking about earlier. But also I like pancakes, bacon and sausage

Sister Field:

Q: If you could replace your voice with any actor’s, who do you choose?

A: Tom Holland. And the only reason I say that is because as sick as it would be to sound like Morgan Freeman, T Holland is the only actor who is a similar age, so my voice wouldn’t sound freakishly weird.

Mom:

Q: When is your release date?

A: September 23rd

Q: Your favorite scripture used to be 1 Nephi 3:7; do you have a different favorite scripture now?

A: I have too many favorite scriptures to count. But 3rd Nephi 5:13 is way good right now.

“Behold, I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I have been called of him to declare his word among his people, that they might have everlasting life.”

Q: We’ve been studying a lot of church history in seminary; do you have a favorite church history person or story?

A: John Tanner, look him up

Q: Do you still ride your bike?

A: We didn’t get our bikes back until 2 days ago, so no

Q: Have you ever been to Braum’s Ice Cream & Burger Restaurant?

A: Braum’s is overrated, don’t @ me. It’s good, but not good enough to claim that it’s “the best.”

Nate:

Q: What is the most “Oklahoman” thing you’ve seen?

A: A guy wearing sunglasses, a shirt with some Trump thing on it, and an American flag attached to the back of his electric Walmart shopping cart

Q: What was the most colorful food you ate last week?

A: Sour patch kids, or this “Spanish” rice that a family made, but said it was “Gringo rice” because it was made by white people.

Kyra:

Q: What is your favorite weird fact?

A: You can’t breathe through your mouth if you stick your tongue all the way out.

Now put your tongue back in your mouth
But actually: It takes about 7 years to have every cell in your body replace itself

Q: What are some ways to grow your faith?

A: Act as if you have more faith. It’s like a muscle, so just exercise more faith. Which is MUCH easier said than done.

Derek:

Q: What’s something you learned on your mission that you’ll never stop doing?

A: How to be 100% responsible

Q: What’s your favorite Conference talk?

A: “Bless in His Name” Henry B. Eyring

Q: What is your best seminary experience?

A: So we did this game where the teams were divided up in the class, and there were like, 5 teams. The goal, as my dad said (He was the teacher) was to “Get the most points.” And in order to get points, everyone can choose whether to raise a green thing, or a red thing. If everyone raised a green thing, all the teams would each get 100 points. If all the teams raised a red thing, nobody got any points. BUT, if someone raised a green thing, and another team raised a red thing, every team that raised a red thing got 200 points. So we did this game, and of course, we all talk about raising green. So we show what we chose, and everyone has red. Wow. So trustworthy. Then we have the next one, and my team was like, “For real, let’s all raise green.” And then our team did. AND NOBODY ELSE DID. I had zero trust in the rest of the teams. But then a few more rounds of all red, so then we give everyone another chance, and we’re like, “Ok, ALL of us raise green, deal?” And EVERYONE is like, “Deal.” So our team raised green, and EVERY OTHER TEAM RAISED RED. My trust in everyone else in that room dropped into the negatives. And it was not coming back anytime soon. But at the end of the lesson, my dad talked about how the goal is to “Get the most points.” And the way we would’ve gotten the most points would’ve been by always raising green, and that if Jesus was in this game, He would’ve raised green every time. And it felt SO GOOD to know that we were on “Team Jesus.” And the rest of those teams were failures, who chose to follow the “father of all lies” himself.

Aaaaaaand yeah. There we go. That’s kinda long, but it was fun. I know the raffle was supposed to happen today, but we are going to do that next week. Because I forgot. And I’m going to have to do something with Kleenexes in the video. You’ll see, I’ll explain it. Anyways, that’s going to be next week. Thanks for reading and sending questions!
